John,
I’m sure you’re getting a lot of end-of-quarter emails today. I just wanted to write to you with one last request before today ends. It’s important.
I recently wrote an article in the Intercept explaining how young black men with mental illnesses are in the single most at-risk category in the nation for fatal police violence. There is something I didn’t write in that specific article but I want to break down here, because I know it matters to you.
District attorneys are some of the only elected officials who can put a check on police power. Electing bold reformers into those positions is a critical goal, and it’s what we’re laser-focused on here on the Real Justice team.
It’s important if we’re going to hold police accountable and set precedents that police can’t murder innocent people at will, for no reason. This is why I got into this work in the first place. And that’s also why I want to let you know:
Real Justice’s budgeting deadline is tonight. We really need your support to tackle the huge task ahead – electing district attorneys all over the country who will not bend to the will of the police and who will change the legal system from the inside out. Please give what you can here:
Listen. Justice is clearly hard to come by. I’m thinking especially of the trials of police officers who murdered Botham Jean and Anthony Hill, underway right now. In each of these cases, we have a real chance. We need to also make sure we are electing district attorneys who will set precedents that police are not above the law for years to come.
Most importantly, I want you to know how much I appreciate you – how much our whole team appreciates you. We have won essential races because thousands of you volunteered or contributed. Countless lives will be better because of that.
Appreciate you so much,
Shaun
