"I know you will continue to be part of this great battle. I look forward to fighting alongside.”
– U.S. Climate Envoy John Kerry,
congratulating RFK Human Rights Awardee Alessandra Munduruku
President Biden knows the Amazon is crucial for the future of our climate. Newly appointed U.S. Climate Envoy John Kerry has a mandate to act for the Amazon and support leaders like Alessandra Munduruku.
Right now, the Munduruku face an imminent threat of invasion by armed illegal miners, and are calling for support from the international community. They need our solidarity!
Kerry’s office and the U.S. Embassy in Brasilia must now leverage their diplomatic capital to publicly express their concern about this explosive situation and encourage Brazilian authorities to evict the invading miners.
In the last week, the encroachment of illegal miners has increased within Munduruku territories. They have brought with them heavy equipment, guns, and likely COVID-19. The Munduruku have positioned territorial defenders to protect their lands, but unfortunately an outbreak of violence could happen at any moment.
There is still time to prevent the loss of Munduruku life, but they need you to take action and call on U.S. leaders to act before it's too late!
