Celebrate the death of the PATRIOT Act by making sure it never returns
John
One year ago, Section 215 of the PATRIOT Act expired, taking away one of the main weapons used by the FBI and NSA to spy on people all over America. But now some lawmakers and unelected bureaucrats are trying to bring back this invasive law to let the government read our emails, collect our phone records, and perform warrantless surveillance on us.1 We can’t let that happen.
For years, intelligence officials and law enforcement agents abused Section 215 of the PATRIOT Act to illegally collect data on millions of people across the country.2 They claimed that this surveillance was necessary to keep us safe from terrorism, but the government’s own internal records show that this invasive surveillance program never helped stop a single terrorist attack.3
Security experts and human rights experts agree that destroying encryption makes us all more vulnerable to malicious hackers, authoritarianism, and other serious threats.4 So let’s make sure Congress knows how we feel about the government’s spying programs.
