John,
Our democracy is under attack. Efforts across the country by nearly half our states' legislatures are attempting to weaken the voice of voters through laws that would make it harder for millions of Americans to vote.
Voter registration restrictions, mail-in voting limitations, cuts to early voting, precinct closures, and gerrymandering are all part of these attacks against American voting rights.
Here in Oregon, it is easy — and safe — to vote. We have "motor voter" registration, and we vote by mail or drop our ballots in secure collection boxes.
The rest of America should vote this way, too. In last fall's election, the pandemic gave several states a taste of the Oregon Way--and voters responded in record numbers.
But, Republican-controlled legislatures were terrified. So now, all over America, they're introducing these bills — hundreds of them— designed to suppress the votes of poor and non-white Americans.
Only Congress can prevent this attack on our democracy and the unrepresentative elections that would result. Earlier this month, the House passed the For the People Act. This pro-democracy flagship reform package contains comprehensive voter protections, bans partisan gerrymandering, and implements high ethical standards.
To be blunt: It would stop all the voter suppression mischief going on right now in Republican-led state legislatures. It's time to pass the For the People Act into law.
That's why I'm joining other elected officials and advocates to build a nationwide advocacy coalition that will put pressure on the Senate to urgently pass this bold democracy reform package that will protect our voting rights. We need your voice to make a powerful impact and demonstrate massive public support.
