Dear John,
It’s been three years to the day since we marched in DC and in solidarity with others around the world. We had been planning to send an email today to mark that anniversary and thank you for all we’ve accomplished together so far. But the recent shootings in Boulder, CO and Atlanta, GA -- among at least 9 mass shootings in 7 days -- are painful reminders that we don’t have the luxury of celebrating progress. We must continue to fight furiously to prevent gun violence, and your support and work on this issue are urgently needed.
Our country is stuck in a cycle of violence and apathy, and it’s hard to watch more communities grieve when all we wanted 3 years ago, and all we want today, is for people to live free from gun violence. We mourn the lives stolen in Boulder, Atlanta, Philadelphia, Chicago, and every single city across America, and share the sorrow of those who carry a new title: survivor.
It is sickening to know that returning to “normal” American life comes with the return of highly-publicized mass murders. But it’s important to recognize that our national gun violence crisis never went away during the pandemic. In fact, as guns flew off shelves in record numbers, suicide rates and domestic violence incidences climbed, and in several of our cities gun homicides increased 50% or more. As we discuss solutions to this epidemic in the coming days, we must not forget that every form of gun violence gripping our nation needs our attention and action.
Gun violence is a public health epidemic that needs bold solutions as big as this crisis itself. But there is hope -- three years after millions came together to demand action, young people are still on the frontlines, fighting for change. We’re leading protests, we’re supporting communities hardest hit by the deadly intersection of guns and COVID-19 through mutual aid, we’re voting in record numbers, and more. Young people are pissed off, and we will NOT stop pushing until we see the change we deserve.
When tragedy occurs, as it does every day in America, don’t let it make you numb: let it fuel you. We are doing this work for ourselves, each other, and our society because we believe there is a better future for us all. That is WHY we’re doing this work. We choose peace and are willing to work hard to make it happen.
SUPPORT OUR MISSION TO SAVE LIVES [[link removed]]
We’re so thankful for your support. We’re still as passionate about this fight as we were when we first marched in front of the U.S. Capitol steps. We will not rest until every community in America is free from gun violence.
Onward,
March For Our Lives
