As we continue to grieve the tragic mass shooting in Boulder, Colorado, the Senate yesterday moved one day closer to a vote on a background checks bill that will save lives.
And if you ask politicians in swing districts about why they’ve voted against similar bills in the past, despite knowing the importance of the legislation, some will privately tell you it’s because of fear of the gun lobby.
But the truth is, that fear must be nothing like the fear people in that Boulder supermarket felt yesterday as the echoes of gunfire rang out, first outside of the store, and then closer inside.
That fear must be nothing like the fear workers and patrons of the store felt as they were led away at the same time their loved ones rushed toward the location as the tragedy played out on the news.
Every day that politicians choose fear of the gun lobby over the courage to act, they choose to accept the epidemic levels of gun violence plaguing our country.
But the truth is, that cycle can come to an end. I believe it is IS coming to an end, because legislators are realizing they have more to fear from us, than they do the gun lobby.
Soon, the Senate will vote on a bill requiring background checks for gun sales. We are going to fight with all our might to pass that bill. But we cannot do it alone. I need your help to get it done.
We can no longer tolerate politicians who fail to acknowledge this crisis. We can no longer let this heartbreaking gun violence crisis continue day after day.
