Last July, I co-sponsored and proudly voted in favor of the George Floyd Justice and Policing Act. And earlier this month, I proudly voted for it once again.
This bill is a comprehensive piece of legislation that pushes critical changes needed to bring accountability and transparency to police departments. Among other things, it bans chokeholds, bans no-knock search warrants in drug cases, and prevents qualified immunity from serving as a shield to liability.
The George Floyd Justice in Policing Act includes the first set of comprehensive police reform laws introduced in a very long time. And these laws are long overdue.
Transparency in law enforcement betters the work of police departments across the country, as well as enhances public safety and trust within our communities. This is how it should be.
Passing this bill is about doing right by communities across this country. This is about upholding our values as Americans and fighting for true equality and justice for all.
Friend, rebuilding trust between law enforcement and our communities starts with ensuring accountability and transparency in policing.
