It's "Equal Pay Day"... Progressives like to claim that the differences between men and women’s work lives are the unsavory fruit of our innately sexist society that pushes women to sacrifice their careers and earnings to take on the lion's share of family caregiving. To raise awareness of this alleged inequity and to push policymakers to make it easier for workers to sue their employers, they created “Equal Pay Day,” a pseudo holiday marking the day that women will have earned enough to catch up with men’s earnings from the previous year. Learn more.

🏛️Patrice Onwuka, director of IWF’s Center for Economic Opportunity, sits before the House Committee on Oversight and Government Reform today as a witness for the “Honoring ‘Equal Pay Day’: Examining the Long-Term Economic Impacts of Gender Inequality” hearing. Read her testimony.

"One-size-fits-all government policies, though well-intentioned, may rob women of the ability to choose for themselves the best work arrangements that fit their interests and circumstances."

 CHAMPION MESSAGE

“I’m willing to put aside policy, because in my mind policy debates, over things like universal health care, are luxuries of a functioning democracy. Even if our democracy isn’t perfect, I think what we are facing now is authoritarianism, and when we are facing authoritarianism, we really have to link arms and just drop everything else. This is the most pressing issue, more than anything else.”

Why Are We Making Women’s Lives More Difficult?

COVID-19 hit everyone hard, but women in particular have suffered serious damage. As a result of the pandemic, millions more women than men lost or had to leave their jobs. Today, women’s labor force participation rate is at its lowest level since 1988. With vaccine rates rising, COVID infection rates ticking down and some states opening up for business, women see a glimmer of light at the end of this dark tunnel. But several, recent bad government policies are standing in their way.

Is It Time To Rename the Violence Against Women Act?

The Violence Against Women Act (VAWA) was originally passed in 1994 to meet the needs of domestic violence victims. It was focused largely on women, as women were overwhelmingly the victims in these cases. Unfortunately, this recent version of VAWA might need a new name, as it proposes removing women from its text in the pursuit of progressive cultural change.

Are the Equality Act’s Consequences for Women “Exaggerated?"

The Equality Act faced a hearing in the Senate Judiciary Committee last Wednesday where Committee Chairman Dick Durbin categorized concerns about women’s sports teams, privacy, and potential harm as “exaggerated” and a cover for bigotry. But the consequences of removing the category of biological sex from the law are already being felt across the country in states that have similar provisions in their law.
