Dear
Friend
--
One year ago today we lost our first resident to COVID-19. A year
later, we are now reporting 901 total deaths since the start of this
pandemic. There is no doubt that we are turning the corner and
beginning to recover as a community, but we must first remember the
real impact this virus has had on our families, friends, neighbors and
loved ones.
Earlier today we held a virtual press conference updating the
community on where we stand in our battle against COVID-19. We also
held a moment of silence to remember and reflect on the people we've
lost. I personally know that behind each metric and statistic is a
life, a story and someone who made an impact on this world.
Tonight, In honor of this remembrance, landmarks throughout the
city will be lit white, including our Civic Center in Downtown Long
Beach, the Long Beach Airport Terminal, the Rainbow Harbor lighthouse
and bridge, the gate sign off of the 710 freeway and our beautiful
bridge replacing the old Gerald Desmond bridge.
I encourage folks to take a moment tonight to check out these
lights, remember the people we've lost and reflect on how we can build
back in their honor.
Thank you and stay safe,
Mayor Robert Garcia
