With two horrific mass shootings in 7 days, our nation is again dripping with blood from gun violence. There is a path forward.
The one senator who has come closer than any other to passing any kind of legislation to stem gun violence in the last decade may come as a surprise: It’s West Virginia Democrat Joe Manchin.
Manchin’s background check bill in 2013 was supported by 55 senators, including 5 Republicans. If not for the filibuster, it would have passed.
This afternoon, President Biden called for Congress to immediately pass legislation to close background check loopholes and ban assault weapons and high-capacity magazines, saying "I don't need to wait another minute, let alone an hour, to take common sense steps that will save the lives in the future."
But there is only one path forward for gun reform laws -- just like there is only one path forward for a $15 minimum wage, voting rights, and clean-energy jobs.
Sen. Elizabeth Warren: "Week after week, month after month, year after year -- the gun violence doesn't end. And things won't get better until Democrats get rid of the filibuster and finally pass gun safety legislation that a huge majority of Americans support. What are we waiting for – another tragedy?"
Rep. Ayanna Pressley: "The trauma of gun violence in our communities is endless. It's time we abolish the filibuster and pass meaningful gun control legislation—background checks, automatic weapons ban, gun licensing, and so much more. Enough is enough."
