Friend, in the span of less than a week we've seen horrific mass shootings in Atlanta and Boulder.
Weeks like this happen in America because -- for years -- we have failed to pass laws that we know will reduce gun violence.
Boulder and Atlanta have now joined the long list of communities rocked by gun violence that includes El Paso, Newtown, Pittsburgh, Orlando, San Bernardino, Las Vegas, Parkland, Dayton, and Virginia Beach -- and this list will keep growing unless we do something.
The time for cowardice, inaction, and excuses is over. The Senate has an opportunity right now to pass gun safety legislation that Joe Biden will sign into law.
The House passed universal background checks earlier this month, and I urge the Senate to act fast on this urgently-needed legislation. Please join my call today -- add your name and tell the Senate to pass universal background checks.
The gun lobby has lost a lot of the influence it once had -- but they're not giving up easily, because they know that we're the closest we've been in a generation to passing new gun safety legislation.
The NRA successfully sued to suspend Boulder's assault weapon ban prior to yesterday's tragedy, and immediately after the news of the shooting, they had the gall to tweet out their propaganda. It's clear they're going to mobilize and encourage Republican senators to stall gun safety legislation at all costs.
We need to show -- here and now -- that our voices outnumber the NRA. That's why I hope you can add your name to our petition.
Together, we are strong. And we can take a historic first step to finally begin to end the epidemic of gun violence in our country.
Thank you,
Jennifer
