Northeastern Minnesotans for Wilderness, the lead organization in the Campaign to Save the Boundary Waters, sued the Trump administration twice - first, after it unlawfully reinstated two cancelled federal mineral leases next to the Boundary Waters and then after it unlawfully renewed these leases. These federal mineral leases would allow dangerous sulfide-ore copper mining along lakes and rivers that flow into the Wilderness. 

Today, we are pleased to report that the Biden administration has announced that it is reviewing the unlawful reinstatement and renewal of Antofagasta’s Twin Metals mineral leases next to the Boundary Waters - the subjects of our lawsuits.

The Biden administration’s review stems from an executive order signed by President Biden that directs federal agencies to review all actions taken during the Trump administration that may conflict with his administration's goals: “to listen to the science; improve public health and protect our environment; to ensure access to clean air and water,” along with other criteria.

In 2018, Northeastern Minnesotans for Wilderness and its partners filed a lawsuit in federal court challenging the unlawful reinstatement of the two cancelled Twin Metals mineral leases. In 2019, NMW and its partners filed a second lawsuit, this time challenging the unlawful renewal of the leases. Last week, the Biden administration filed a motion in the renewal lawsuit in which it stated that it was reviewing the government’s position in the two lawsuits, as well as the history of the Twin Metals mineral leases.

We are optimistic this new review will lead to the protection of the watershed of the Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness, America’s most visited Wilderness area and a wonderland of healthy lakes, rivers, wetlands, and boreal forest.
