Yesterday afternoon, a gunman attacked shoppers at a King Soopers supermarket in Boulder, Colorado, taking the lives of 10 innocent victims.

My heart goes out to the families of these Coloradans who fell victim to another tragic and senseless act of gun violence — the latest in our state, which has endured far too many. We are deeply grateful for the swift response from law enforcement and first responders, including a Boulder police officer who was among the first responders to the 911 call and lost his life in the line of duty.

While we are still learning more about yesterday’s tragic events, it is clear the epidemic of gun violence in our country must be met with bold federal action on background checks and other common-sense measures that will protect lives.

Enough gun violence in our supermarkets. Our schools. Our public spaces and places of entertainment. As we continue to make progress recovering from the pandemic, our return to normal must not include a renewed proliferation of mass shootings, violence, and loss of life.

Aurora. Arapahoe High School. STEM School Highlands Ranch. Colorado Springs. Thornton. And far too many more. Our communities are forever changed by the violence that has taken place — but they have deepened our resolve for action.

It’s long past time for Congress to take action to keep deadly weapons out of the wrong hands. There are steps that the overwhelming majority of Americans want us to take. And they have every right to expect us to finally do something about gun violence in our country. Enough is enough.
