Congratulations to the National Association of Hispanic Nurses, awarded with this year’s Hispanic Health Leadership Award from the National Hispanic Medical Association. NAHN thanked the medical association “for helping NAHN celebrate the culture, caring, and spirit of Hispanic nurses who are the leading voice of health in our communities.”
Donna E. Shalala, PhD, led the study committee that produced the first National Academy of Medicine study on the future of nursing in 2010. Mary K. Wakefield, PhD, RN, co-chairs the study committee of the forthcoming, second report. They talk about what’s been accomplished, what’s ahead, and how the pandemic has shaped nursing’s future.
Besser and Burnes Bolton Discuss Nurses, Public and Community Health
Robert Wood Johnson Foundation President and CEO Richard Besser, MD, and Linda Burnes Bolton, DrPH, RN, FAAN, senior vice president and chief health equity officer at L.A.’s Cedars-Sinai Medical Center, kicked off the Campaign’s recent “The Future of Nursing: Passion, Purpose and Progress” event, talking about ideas to reframe nursing to advance health equity.
Two Paths, One Goal: Create Equity Through Nursing
Antonia Villarruel, PhD, RN, FAAN, recalls one of her first nursing jobs at a clinic for migrant farmworkers. Marcus Henderson, MSN, RN, found his voice at a young age—and as a biracial American, has used it. At the Campaign for Action summit, the first-generation college grads spoke of their leadership roles today.
AARP Foundation President Lauds Nurses’ Essential Roles
AARP Foundation’s mission is to create a world in which no older adult feels vulnerable. That’s one reason, says its president, that it started the Center to Champion Nursing in America in 2007, along with AARP and the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation. In a recent talk, Lisa Marsh Ryerson also talked of how nurses are essential links in communities.
Penn Nursing scientist and Campaign adviser Adriana Perez, PhD, CRNP, FAAN, has earned a grant from the National Institute on Aging to study the exercise-related reasons older Latinos experience a disproportionate burden of cognitive disease. “Tiempo Juntos para la Salud” (Time Together for Health) will test a multilevel intervention.
Every community welcomes leadership, and now’s the time to get involved: AARP and the Nurses on Boards Coalition seek nurses to represent AARP on community boards working to improve patient care, support family caregivers, build healthier communities and advocate for policies that lead to better health and well-being.
