John,
A few weeks ago, we wrote to you about how many members of Congress use their so-called “leadership PACs” as “slush funds” to purchase tickets to sporting events, expensive steakhouse dinners, stays at luxury resorts, and much more.
This is political corruption and it’s allowed because of a loophole in the law. And the abuse is rampant — nearly 90% of members of Congress have leadership PACs, and dozens use them to pay for personal expenses.
Issue One is working to close the loophole — but you can help shut this practice down immediately by taking action now.
Tell your members of Congress to immediately pledge not to use their leadership PAC funds for personal expenses.
This loophole is outrageous. Leadership PAC funds are intended to be used by politicians to support other politicians who share their views on issues — not to spend on weekend getaways at lavish resorts and meals at five-star restaurants.
We’re going to continue to push for Congress and the Federal Election Commission (FEC) to close the loophole and extend the personal use prohibition to leadership PACs.
But members of Congress don’t need a law or FEC regulation to stop abusing their leadership PACs — they can stop doing that on their own. That’s why your representative and senators need to hear from you today.
Tell your members of Congress: “I want you to pledge not to use leadership PAC funds for personal expenses.”
Onward,
Ethan Rome Chief of Communications and Strategic Initiatives, Issue One
