Dear Friends,

In a new Medium essayLess Hysteria, More Solutions on the Border, Migrants Please, Simon suggests that if Republicans are so concerned about the rising migrant flows on our southern border there are four areas they can work with the Democrats on:

1. Support additional funding for temporary housing of unaccompanied minors in the US

2. Join with Senator Schumer to fast track all Biden nominees at DHS, HHS and State who will be working on these tough issues

3. Help the Administration stand up and implement a COVID plan for the Americas

4. Endorse various efforts to modernize the immigration system, as Senate Republicans did in both 2006 and 2013.

Additionally, Simon’s essay goes through a great deal of new data about what is happening now on the border, and quotes a new report from the Pew Research Center: “The U.S. Border Patrol apprehended nearly 100,000 migrants at the U.S.-Mexico border in February, the tenth consecutive month of increased apprehensions and a return to levels last seen in mid-2019.”

Yes the flows we saw in February, Biden’s first full month on the job, were below what they were in 2019, when Trump was in the White House, and have rose every month for the last nine months of the Trump Presidency.  The data makes clear that the current rising flows on the border are a challenge, like so many others, which Biden inherited from the previous Administration.  And like those other challenges, Biden is doing  his very best to address in the typical heads down, get to work style we’ve come to expect from the Biden Presidency.

Sincerely,

Simon, Georgia and the rest of the NDN team
