My heart goes out to the Boulder, Colorado community as we learn more details about yesterday’s mass-shooting.

This is the second mass-shooting in less than a week. Eighteen families in Boulder and Atlanta have lost loved ones in these tragedies, and many more to the daily gun violence we see in communities across the U.S.

Just two weeks ago, the Democratic House passed legislation to close gun loopholes and require universal background checks. It’s time for the Senate to step up, and not let Mitch McConnell get in the way. They must immediately end the filibuster and vote on this critical gun safety legislation. Victims of gun violence deserve justice and reform, but in tragedy after tragedy those victims have been denied action. We can’t let the gun lobby and Mitch McConnell hold our agenda hostage — that’s why we need to reform or end the filibuster.

This is not a problem without solutions. We know the reforms we need to pass to save lives. Gun safety legislation is overwhelmingly popular, but Republicans have blocked it every time. Democrats in the Senate need the courage to act.

The filibuster is archaic, anti-democratic, and nowhere in the Constitution. It’s a Jim Crow-era relic that prevents progress on gun violence, climate change, voting rights, and so much more.
