John —
Parkland. Las Vegas. Orlando. Virginia Tech. Sandy Hook. El Paso. Columbine. San Bernardino. Fort Hood. And just in the last few days, Atlanta and Boulder.
Tragically, each of these communities has been torn apart by horrific acts of gun violence that have taken the lives of our family, our friends, and our children.
In the wake of these horrors, Congress had the opportunity to take action and to save lives, but again and again, failed to do so. Too many Republicans beholden to the NRA, momentum stalled out far too soon, and far too short of the reforms we need.
Sign my petition demanding the Senate take up and pass the House’s bipartisan gun safety bills immediately. We cannot sit by and do nothing again and let this horrific epidemic of gun violence continue:
In 2018, you helped Democrats win the Majority in the House. And high on our agenda were two bills to expand background checks and close gun purchase loopholes.
We passed them, and that legislation went to Mitch McConnell’s desk — where it sat, collecting dust. And since then, tens of thousands more lives were tragically lost to gun violence.
I know we are not powerless to act in the face of this horrific violence and death. We can and must enact universal background checks. We can and must ban assault weapons and extended clips. We can and must end the unique immunity the gun industry enjoys while selling the most dangerous products. And so much more.
Earlier this month, the House once again acted. We passed bills to enact a universal background check on all firearms purchases, no matter where the gun is purchased, no matter from whom it’s purchased. We acted to close the loophole that allowed the shooter who murdered nine people at an African American church in Charleston to purchase a gun he should have been denied.
Now, those bills go to the Senate. They must act.
Can you add your name to mine and demand that the Senate finally take up and pass the House’s bipartisan gun safety bills and send them to President Biden’s desk for his signature? Now is a critical moment:
Let’s act.
