John,
The For the People Act was formally introduced in the Senate last week, and tomorrow the Senate Rules Committee will hold a hearing on the bill.
This is an important first step towards passage in the Senate. Can you share with your friends and family and ask them to email their senators in support of these crucial democracy reforms?
The For the People Act is full of crucial anti-corruption reforms, like requiring presidents and vice presidents to divest from business interests that could pose a conflict of interest with their official duties. Just imagine how different the four years of the Trump administration would have been if Donald Trump hadn’t been able to profit from donors, foreign governments, special interests, and Republican politicians.
But that’s barely scratching the surface—it would also support and advance DC statehood, ban partisan gerrymandering, require states to make early voting, voting by mail and same-day voter registration available for federal elections, require disclosure of many more dark money donors, and require an ethics code for the Supreme Court (for the first time!).
The For the People Act is an extremely exciting bill because of its enormous potential to transform our democracy for the better.
After this hearing, we don’t know when the For the People Act may come to a vote—and that’s exactly why getting the word out to your friends and family, and asking them to email their senators is so important. Keeping pressure on senators, and making it clear that Americans are excited about making our democracy more accountable, equitable and transparent is key to getting this bill passed. Share now and ask your friends and family to tell their senators we're counting on them to support the For the People Act. >>
Thank you,
Noah Bookbinder
