Frankly, the president is giving the government too much credit. While federal grants and purchase agreements certainly helped accelerate vaccine production — by essentially helping companies scale up manufacturing capacity even before they knew whether their vaccine candidates would succeed in clinical trials — the actual research was overwhelmingly performed and funded by the private sector.

Earlier in his career, Sharfstein was the health policy adviser to influential, liberal Congressman Henry Waxman, D-Calif. He is currently the vice dean for Public Health Practice and Community Engagement at the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health.

Funding the program will require massive new taxes. Sen. Bernie Sanders has floated a new 4% income tax on households earning over $29,000 and a new 7.5% payroll tax, among other levies, to pay for Medicare for All vision. Sanders’s bill would also set physician reimbursement rates at current Medicare levels — which are far below the market rates that private insurers pay.
