By now you've likely heard the news. Yesterday afternoon, a gunman opened fire in a Boulder, Colorado grocery store and killed at least ten individuals, including a police officer.

This is an especially personal tragedy for me.

As you know, I survived a shooting at a grocery store that devastated my beloved Tucson. That was ten years ago. And once again, a heartbroken nation struggles to find words that can appropriately express our pain for another community shattered by gun violence and our frustration at lawmakers who have failed to act to prevent the epidemic levels of gun violence in this country.

Because the truth is, there is no other country in the industrialized world where these kinds of mass shootings happen so regularly and elected leaders refuse to summon the courage to act.

But the evidence is clear: Congress can take actions that will save lives. They know, as we do, that in states requiring background checks there is less gun violence, there are fewer police officers killed with guns, there are fewer suicides using guns, there are fewer women killed with guns.

Today the Senate Judiciary Committee is holding a hearing on gun violence prevention. It may even be happening as you read this email.

The House already passed a strong bill that will save lives. Hopefully the Senate will do the same next. And I promise you, we are going to do everything we can to make sure they follow suit. But I cannot do it alone, so I am asking:
