The 2020 election cycle had many ups and downs. We supported more than 25 different candidates who ran on a progressive, grassroots-backed agenda, that centered environmental, racial, and economic justice. This year won’t have a presidential election or even a midterm, but that doesn't mean there won’t be important elections.
That’s why Sunrise Movement is proud to endorse Jennifer Carroll Foy for Virginia Governor and Sam Rasoul for Virginia Lieutenant Governor! Both candidates are taking on a political machine that has operated through both parties for decades in the state. They will need our help to get the attention and backing they deserve in order to put two Green New Deal Champions into office over the next few months.
Both Jennifer and Sam have served in the Virginia House of Delegates prior to their runs for office. They each worked tirelessly to fight for the most vulnerable and introduced crucial legislation to bring forward the state’s version of the Green New Deal. That’s why our Virginia hubs across the state were comfortable with giving each of them an endorsement earlier this year. With 10 weeks to go before the June 8th primary, both of these candidates need our support.

Jennifer Carroll Foy is running against one of the most powerful men in Virginia politics, former governor Terry McAuliffe. McAuliffe spent his time in office taking hundreds of thousands of dollars of cash from Dominion Energy, the state’s biggest electricity and natural gas supplier. If elected, Jennifer would be the first Black female governor in the history of our country and continue fighting for every Virginian’s right to good health care, strong public schools, and a clean environment. Jennifer knows that vulnerable communities, especially communities of color, are often hit hardest by environmental stressors that can have devastating effects on our health. If elected, she’ll invest in green energy production, bringing diverse, high paying jobs to every corner of the Commonwealth. She'll be working to spur economic growth, protect funding for state parks, safeguard additional land for public use, and pass the Virginia Green New Deal.
We have another strong ally in Sam Rasoul, who is running for Lieutenant Governor as the candidate with the most experience. Sam has represented one of the poorest districts in the state, House District 11, which includes his native Roanoke and he was the first Muslim elected to the Virginia House in 2014. The son of Palestinian immigrants to the US, Sam has always been a fighter for the change he wanted to see and ran for Congress in 2008 at just 27 years old. Since being elected to the House of Delegates, Sam has been fighting to get special interests out of the political process. Even his current campaign is 100% donor-funded, without any money from PACs. His record on climate speaks for itself. While in office, he has opposed new fossil fuel infrastructure while co-founding the state’s Green New Deal Coalition AND introducing the the Green New Deal Act in the House of Delegates. Sam is a bridge-builder, a fighter, and will do everything he can to fight for the most vulnerable when elected.
Our Virginia hub members have been fighting for these candidates and will continue to do so right up until election day. These candidates need our support more than ever, as Virginians can get to the ballot box as early as late April.
