John —

A few hours ago, multiple people were murdered at a grocery store in Boulder, Colorado.

Our community in Georgia is still grieving last week’s shooting targeting Asian American women, and now another community has been struck by tragedy. More families praying and waiting to hear from their loved ones and worried about their safety. More kids who will be traumatized and feel unsafe in their own neighborhoods. My heart is with them, and I pray deeply for them tonight.

But I have one message for my colleagues in Washington: ENOUGH.

The House has passed multiple gun safety bills already this year, and it is time for action from the Senate. Add your name to mine and demand the Senate immediately call a vote on H.R. 8, the universal background checks bill.

With the vaccines and the American Rescue Plan rolling out, so many of us have felt optimism about a “return to normal.” The idea that family, hugs and gatherings are on the horizon.

But normal in this country has also come to mean mass shootings. Epidemic levels of gun violence that too many are numb to.

Another shooting in a long line that bears far too great a resemblance to stories we know too well. Many of us — and especially Colorado families — are undoubtedly flashing back to what happened in Columbine and Aurora. I’m struck that this isn’t even the only shooting at a grocery store that we can recall. My friend Gabby Giffords and 18 of her constituents were shot outside of a grocery store in Tuscon, AZ 10 years ago in January.

For too long, normal meant no action or justice for survivors of gun violence. This moment is our chance to change that.

Please add your name to mine to demand the Senate immediately schedule and hold a vote on universal background checks. This bill will save lives.

If not now, when? How many more people must die for the Senate to act? Keep the pressure up. We need your voice in this fight with us.

Thank you,

Lucy McBath
