Yutico was sentenced to SIXTY YEARS in a cage for a crime he did not commit on the recommendation of the previous DA, who we helped defeat. Even when he pointed out that his lawyer was negligent, and the evidence against him shaky, the old DA fought him, and demanded an outrageous sentence.

But now the New Orleans District Attorney has a dedicated department for addressing wrongful convictions, and the old ways are coming to an end. Instead of spending the rest of his life in Louisiana’s famously dangerous, violent prison system, Yutico is home with his mother, planning his future.

John, Yutico was falsely convicted and confined for years.

Police used a ‘show up’, where they take someone who has just been the victim of a crime, and point out someone else who ‘matches the description’ on the street — and then ask the victim to decide whether that person did the crime. It’s dangerous, riddled with racial bias — and it was the ONLY evidence against Yutico.

Together, we elected the new DA who took justice seriously and ensured that Yutico had a chance to prove his innocence.
