John -- We’ve emailed you before about the effects targeted disinformation are having on the Latinx community’s willingness to take a COVID-19 vaccine. Now it finally seems the media is catching on too:

At every level, tech companies are failing the Latinx community. Research has found that while Facebook put warning labels on all but 29% of English-language misinformation on the site, it failed to put similar labels on 70% of Spanish-language misinformation.

Unfortunately, those failings on the internet are having tangible, real-life effects. In a recent poll, 37% of Latinos said they would not get a vaccination when it became available to them. With the levels of vaccine hesitancy that high, it’s impossible not to blame the rampant misinformation being distributed on social media and the internet.

And if tech companies won’t get the job done, then we’ll have to do it ourselves. That’s why we're stepping up with the recent launch of our Latino Anti-Disinformation Lab, a collaborative project with Media Matters to determine the best ways to counter lies and inoculate the Latinx community against them.

As María Teresa has said, "disinformation has life and death consequences. It is a weapon built for war, and its aim is to harm a population by undermining trust in a vote or a vaccine."
