Comprehensive immigration reform has been a goal of mine for a long time. And so has protecting our Dreamers.
We've been fighting to get this right since long before Donald Trump was elected. But during his term in office, he made things much, much worse — separating families at our borders, jailing asylum-seekers, and deporting many of our friends and neighbors — all while pushing hateful and racist rhetoric to further divide our communities.
At its heart, this is about who we are and who we want to be. Our nation's symbol, the Statue of Liberty, bears the promise of America — that we are open to "the huddled masses yearning to breathe free." But too often, the reality of our country has been the demonization of immigrants, refugees, and those who look to our shores with dreams of a better life.
Consider the Dreamers, young people who came to this country as infants or children, and who are often denied opportunities in the only country they've ever called home.
Fortunately, we are finally making a positive and humane change. With my support, the House passed the bipartisan Dream and Promise Act to give millions of Dreamers a path to citizenship. It is now up to the Senate to take action for our Dreamers and their families.
Attacks on our immigrant communities must end, and those living and working here must be offered a meaningful and swift pathway to citizenship.
And for our Dreamers? No more broken promises. No more scare tactics. It's time for Dreamers to feel safe and be safe in the United States of America now and forevermore.
