Last week, 8 people, including 6 Asian women, died in Atlanta at the hands of a white man, whose treatment in the press has been roundly softened while his victims' names are mispronounced and their work characterized as trivial or criminal.
To see white supremacy and capitalism working so closely together prompts some to call the crime and its defenders “un-American,” but any student of American history knows that criminalizing sex work, anti-Asian racism and violence and misogyny are quintessentially American, and as present here in the Pacific Northwest as in the deep South.
Seattle calls itself the Emerald City, unironically holding up our progressiveness, our diversity, the wonders of our wizards while hoping nobody pays attention to the oppression, inequity, and racism lurking just behind the curtain. As Socialists, we are responsible for showing our neighbors that another world is possible, that an anti-racist world can be realized, and doing the work to make it so. We echo National DSA’s statement in saying: we stand with the Asian-American community in grief and solidarity.
The April General Membership Meeting has been postponed to Tuesday, April 13th, 2021 at 7 PM, which is to say it is now the second Tuesday of the month, rather than the first. Please register here to add this to your calendar and get the Zoom invite ahead of the meeting!
SDSA’s Rally to support Alabama Amazon Worker Unionization has been RESCHEDULED! We found out from the mayor’s office that there was a Covid vaccination clinic one block from our rally, so our coalition voted to reschedule the event to avoid potential criticisms from the mayor and capitalist media that we would be impeding vaccinations by continuing with the rally as scheduled.
So please RSVP for the solidarity rally which is now this Friday, March 26 at 5 PM at the Amazon Spheres-- and be sure to invite friends!
And while we’re at it, we believe both as a chapter and nationally that universal healthcare is a human right; therefore we encourage our readers to find their phase and get vaccinated as soon as they’re able! Taking your turn when it’s your turn is a crucial step in achieving herd immunity!
Tech Worker Labor Organizing and Education: Mutual Aid, The PRO Act, and Tech Tools!

We’ll also give a short presentation on software that can help workers organize without relying on tech monopolies. Register here for this meeting happening Thursday, March 25th at 7PM!
$5.4M Out of SPD and into community - Divest SPD in collaboration with Decriminalize Seattle continues to organize emails to Seattle City Council and Public Comment!
Keep the emails coming! Continue to demand City Council to hold SPD accountable for overspending by $5.4M in 2020 and to give ALL of those funds to participatory budgeting. Click HERE to send an email NOW.
Divest is also looking for folks to call in and make a public comment at the next Public Safety committee meeting, this Tuesday 3/23 at 9:30 AM. Help show that there's still a lot of support for defunding SPD and reinvesting in community. Find Sample public comment HERE.
@DivestSPDNo Charity for Cops Rally! On Tuesday, March 30th at 3:30 PM, Divest SPD will be delivering a letter with hundreds of signatures to The Seattle Foundation’s office, and holding a rally to show them that more and more people are watching them and demanding NO CHARITY FOR COPS! We demand that The Seattle Foundation fully divest from the Seattle Police and reinvest in the BIPOC community.
Please join us at this strictly socially-distanced and masked event! Letter delivery will take place at Westlake Center at 3:30 PM, and the rally begins at 4. An ASL interpreter will be on site for the rally portion. Please RSVP via Facebook for this event.
