Dear Subscriber,
We recently joined with hundreds of news organizations around the world to highlight climate-related stories and were struck by how popular these were with our readers.
Our most-read article from Climate Week looked at how property owners on the city’s coastline are bracing for impact as they await upcoming changes to federal flood insurance policies. These changes are likely to alter the landscape of affordable housing in New York City in significant ways.
Reporter Olivia Schwob spoke with homeowners and experts, looked at how FEMA flood insurance rates are expected to rise, and examined pre-foreclosure filings. Her reporting indicates that low-lying, flood-prone neighborhoods are on the brink of a crisis. There are still many unknowns about these shifting policies and related implications; we’ll continue to report and bring you updates and answers.
As New Yorkers, we’re all in this together. Our “City on the Edge” series will keep you informed on the often complicated climate-related issues that impact our communities.
