This month, I supported landmark legislation to expand voting rights, combat voter suppression, strengthen ethics laws, and improve election security.
And I have to tell you -- this bill couldn’t have come at a more crucial moment for our country and our democracy.
State lawmakers have introduced more than 250 bills to make it harder for people to vote , and these types of bills have cropped up in nearly every single state in our country -- including several right here in New Jersey.
And that’s not all -- the Supreme Court is hearing a case that could dismantle what’s left of the Voting Rights Act and give states even more ground to pass these kinds of extreme voter restrictions.
This is a make-or-break moment for our democracy, and we must act. Will you add your name to mine and tell the Senate to pass this landmark piece of voting rights legislation? [[link removed]]
In recent months, we’ve seen both the strength and possibility of our democracy as well as tremendous threats to it.
In the 2020 election, voter turnout soared thanks to expansions to voting by mail and early voting in the wake of the pandemic. Here in New Jersey, every eligible voter was sent a mail-in ballot for the general election, and we shattered turnout records with more than 4.6 million ballots counted .
But then on January 6th, we saw a horrific attack on our democracy at the Capitol incited by misinformation and lies meant to undermine our free and fair elections and voting systems.
It’s never been more important to defend our democracy and strengthen Americans’ ability to participate in it. Please -- add your name and call on the Senate to pass our bill to protect and expand voting rights in our country. [[link removed]]
