John xxxxxx,

Growing up in Brooklyn in the throes of the crack cocaine epidemic, I have seen countless lives ruined by the failed War on Drugs.

America incarcerates more people than any other country in the world. It's a stain on our democracy that has been fueled by overcriminalization and unjust sentencing laws that disproportionately affect Black and Latino Americans.

Right now, the sentencing disparity between crack cocaine and powder cocaine is 18:1. There is no credible justification for this disparity. It just serves to disproportionately imprison Black and Latino Americans for cocaine-related offenses.

Sen. Cory Booker and I have introduced bipartisan legislation to eliminate the sentencing disparity between crack and powder cocaine and retroactively adjust sentences for people affected by this unjust law. It’s called the EQUAL Act.

Cory and I are counting on grassroots support to make this bill become law and end this failed War On Drugs policy. Will you sign on as a citizen co-sponsor of the EQUAL Act today?

We have a real opportunity right now to change the system and end the sentencing disparity. I’m going to keep doing everything in my power to get this bill passed and reform our criminal justice system. Thank you for supporting this work.

Keep the faith,

Hakeem
