When I heard that Senator Joe Manchin was holding up the COVID relief bill
back on March 5, I picked up the phone and called Majority Leader Schumer.
I told him that progressives in the House wouldn’t take a weaker bill.

At the time, Manchin was trying to weaken the unemployment insurance
provisions in the relief bill, and it was just unacceptable. How could we
take help away from people during this crisis? Progressives had to
compromise on things in the bill when it went over to the Senate, but we
were not going to let Manchin water down critical protections for the
millions who have lost their jobs during the pandemic. I told Sen. Schumer
to pass a message on to Manchin: if you weaken unemployment insurance,
House progressives wouldn’t be voting for the bill. And it worked. Manchin
backed down. The relief stayed in.

Every step of the way, I’m fighting to win as much as I can for the
people. It’s why I fought to protect expanded unemployment insurance in
the last relief bill. It’s why I fought to ensure people got survival
checks. It’s why I fight every day for social, economic, racial, and
environmental justice. It’s why I picked up the phone that Friday morning
and called the Majority Leader.
