Congresswoman Lesko Weekly Update

Good afternoon,

This week, I was in Washington, D.C. for another busy week in the U.S. House of Representatives!

The Violence Against Women Act Does Not Protect Women

The House voted this week on the Democrats’ partisan version of the Violence Against Women Act. Previous reauthorizations of the Violence Against Women Act have been a bipartisan, common-sense effort to help women who have been victims of violence and abuse. However, this year’s version is filled with partisan priorities that force women’s domestic violence shelters to take in men who identify as women, which would put vulnerable women and children at risk. This bill also strips away protections for religious organizations and eliminates Second Amendment rights without due process, proving that this bill is more about pushing leftist ideology than helping women in need. I voted no on this bill.

Unconstitutional ERA Deadline Removal

Democrats in the House also pushed a resolution to remove the deadline for the Equal Rights Amendment (ERA). This is unconstitutional because the deadline expired in 1979 when only 35 of the 38 states needed ratified the amendment. No states ratified the amendment after the deadline was extended to 1982, thus ending the ratification process. Women do not need the ERA as the 14th Amendment to the U.S. Constitution already guarantees equality under the law and prohibits discrimination on the basis of sex. Additionally, pro-abortion groups have admitted that codifying the ERA would eliminate pro-life laws that protect taxpayer dollars from funding abortions and save the lives of unborn babies. For these reasons, I could not support this measure.

Democrats Want Open Borders

The House also voted on the Democrats’ H.R. 6 that would incentivize illegal immigration in the midst of a humanitarian, national security, and public health crisis at our southern border. This bill provides amnesty to millions of illegal immigrants in our nation and uses taxpayer dollars to pay for green cards for illegal immigrants. Granting mass amnesty only encourages more illegal immigration, providing preferential treatment to illegal immigrants over those here legally. I have introduced legislation that seeks to address the root causes of the border crisis and strengthens our border security, the Border Crisis Prevention Act, but Democrats have refused to even hear my bill in committee.

Share Your Thoughts on Big Tech Censorship and Monopolies

On March 25, 2021, the House Energy and Commerce Committee will hold a hearing with leaders from Facebook, Google, and Twitter, and Republicans on the Committee want to hear from you. Click here to submit your feedback and comments on what concerns you believe must be raised with Big Tech Companies and whether or not you believe everyone is treated fairly by these companies.

Legislative Update

I cosponsored Congresswoman Cathy McMorris Rodgers’ Unauthorized Spending Accountability (USA) Act. This bill aims to cut federal spending by targeting unauthorized programs and creates the Spending Accountability Commission to conduct a review of mandatory spending programs and identify where cuts can be made. Our nation has saddled future generations with trillions of dollars in debt. This bill seeks to lower federal spending and create a more efficient federal government.

Encouraging Story

I am happy to share this story about FreshStart, a health care agency in Phoenix, AZ which is offering free transportation and assistance registering for the COVID-19 vaccine for Maricopa County residents 65 years and older. It is great to see people stepping up to help protect our seniors and ensure that seniors who want a vaccine are able to get a vaccine.

Casework Highlight

A constituent contacted our office because her attorney fee agreement was approved in September 2020, but her disability back payment had not been released as of February 2021. Our office reached out to the payment center and asked that the funds be released on an expedited basis. The constituent reported that she received her funds within less than three weeks after our office reached out.

Coronavirus Casework Highlight

A constituent contacted our office because she had submitted an original application for unemployment assistance, but had not been provided an update from the Department of Economic Security (DES) in over a month. The constituent contacted multiple government offices and we were the only ones who followed up with her. Our office reached out to DES and confirmed the release of her funds.
