Hi John --

Deb Haaland just made history by becoming the first Native American Cabinet Secretary.

But getting confirmed is just the first battle in what will be Haaland's constant fight as Secretary of the Interior. Haaland will be overseeing federal lands -- the same lands that right-wing extremist militiamen have been attempting to occupy for years.

The federal government previously hesitated to confront these armed extremist militiamen, but they're a continuously growing threat. One of them, a rancher named Cliven Bundy, has already warned that he and his allies will “walk towards guns” if the new administration attempts to collect long-overdue fees from them.

Armed militiamen like Bundy have illegally occupied federal land for years, but the GOP has only provided excuses for these right-wing extremists. Bundy posted praise of the violent mob that attacked the Capitol on Jan. 6 on Facebook. And Cliven's son Ammon Bundy was arrested twice last summer for leading maskless protestors to object to Idaho's stay at home orders and refusing repeatedly to leave Idaho state government buildings. And we're so glad we finally have a Secretary of the Interior who will stand up to this behavior, but we know it will make Haaland a target for these extremists.

Our team at ASPIRE is working hard to support and defend women of color leaders like Haaland, and we're so glad to have supporters like you who helped propel Haaland through the confirmation process.

But it's become increasingly difficult to keep up our work as more and more extremists are emboldened by the GOP's racist, white nationalist rhetoric. Our workload keeps growing while our fundraising keeps falling, and if we don't raise $2,400 by the end of the day, we might have to abandon some of our work.
