Dear John,
In honor of Women’s History Month, we are giving away an exclusive ARC 2021 Calendar to all first-time donors who make a donation of $50 or more! Our Women and Non-Binary Department worked together with ARC Creatives – a collective of system-impacted individuals dedicated to making transformative art – to design the first-ever ARC calendar. This calendar features photos of various ARC services and advocacy work, inspirational quotes and stories, and celebrations of our community members’ achievements. Stay organized for the rest of 2021… and support formerly incarcerated and currently incarcerated individuals at the same time!

Women and non-binary individuals face unique challenges in the criminal legal system and during reentry, particularly around issues of child custody and domestic violence. These issues affect nearly 100 percent of incarcerated women, so our Women and Non-Binary Department aims to provide better gender-responsive services for women, non-binary people, and families. We serve over 100 women and non-binary members in reentry and facilitate the Women 4 Freedom group inside California’s two largest women’s prisons, the California Institution for Women (CIW) and California Correctional Women’s Facility (CCWF).
DID YOU KNOW:
Over the last twenty years, the number of women in prison grew by 832%, nearly twice the rate for men during the same period. Since 1991, the Bureau of Justice Statistics reports that the number of children with mothers in prison has doubled, and more than 60% of women in state prisons have a child under the age of 18. Black and indigenous women are markedly overrepresented in prisons and jails. 60% of women in jails under local control have not been convicted of a crime and are awaiting trial – they are only in jail because they cannot afford bail. The Sentencing Project reports that this increase is the result of more expansive law enforcement efforts, stiffer drug sentencing laws, and post-conviction barriers to reentry that uniquely affect women.
The growing number of women in prison, especially women of color and women who identify as LGBTQIA, is a serious and pressing crisis that impacts our friends, mothers, sisters, neighbors, and families. At ARC we are committed to helping and aiding women and non-binary individuals who are affected by the justice system. Help us support them by making a gift today, and we hope you’ll proudly hang your calendar as a reminder of your partnership in our work.
