Five years ago today, 13-year-old J.R. Gustafson was killed when his friend unintentionally shot him with a gun thought to be unloaded. Because that gun lacked a crucial safety feature that could have prevented this tragedy, J.R.’s family fought through grief to get justice for their son, taking on the gun lobby in court, represented by Brady Legal. Now, the landmark victory we fought hard for and won in court is being threatened.

Brady Legal spent years fighting alongside J.R.’s family and accomplished a landmark victory when a Pennsylvania court struck down the harmful, longstanding gun industry protection law that prevents the gun industry from being held liable in court in many cases. Now, the gun lobby, with support from Attorneys General in states like Texas and Montana, is fighting to reverse this decision, and prevent J.R.’s family from proving their case in court.

J.R.’s family deserves their day in court, to prove their case— just like every American. And shielding the gun industry from accountability makes all Americans less safe. But, John, Brady Legal has spent over 30 years fighting – and winning – against the gun lobby in court and we are ready to defeat them again. J.R.’s family deserves justice as much as any American family who seeks justice. A victory will honor their son’s memory, and prevent other families from suffering as they have.
