OP-ED: Defending Hoosier Jobs and America's Free Market Principles
In an op-ed for The Star Press I voiced my concern over a Senate provision that would cause AquaBounty Technologies in Albany to cease production immediately and put Hoosiers out of work.
The results would be this: 160,000 fish currently maturing in Albany would be euthanized. Dozens of Hoosiers would be out of a job. The operation would be moved to another country likely China which sees the incredible value in dominating agriculture innovation. If one legacy industry can manipulate Congress to unilaterally kill one innovative company, how free is our free market? I’m doing everything I can to keep this provision out of our funding bills to protect innovation and ensure the free market is allowed to operate.
Bill to Ensure Dignified Burial for the Remains of Aborted Children
I will always fight to protect innocent life and ensure all unborn children are treated with dignity. The recent discovery of over 2,200 fetal remains in the home of an Indiana abortionist, Dr. Ulrich Klopfer, proves there is a deeply disturbing problem with our current system. That’s why I joined a group of Senators to introduce the Dignity for Aborted Children Act to ensure the bodies of the unborn are treated with respect. In addition, Senator Braun and I wrote a letter calling for the U.S. Department of Justice to assist with the investigation into this deeply disturbing situation.
Saudi Arabia Fulfilling Its Commitment to UN Funding For Yemen
During my recent trip to Saudi Arabia, I pressed Saudi Leaders on the status of their pledged monetary aid to help end the humanitarian crisis in Yemen, as well as the murder of Washington Post reporter Jamal Khashoggi. I’m pleased to see that Saudi Arabia is fulfilling its commitment with the official transfer of $500 million to the UN, and I thank them for doing so. We will continue to monitor the situation to ensure this assistance is properly administered to help end the suffering of the Yemeni people. I was also pleased to see reports that Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman is publicly echoing what he told Senator King and I during our recent visit that he takes responsibility for the death of Jamal Khashoggi as the leader of Saudi Arabia. In doing so, the crown Prince has taken the first steps in repairing the Saudi-US relationship. Saudi Arabia is an important strategic partner, but not one we will support at any cost. If Saudi Arabia seeks to transform into a 21st century leader, it must continue taking public actions to show they are serious about repairing the trust between our two nations.
Bill to Confront Rise of China
At the United Nations General Assembly last week, President Trump spoke about China’s hostile trade practices. Hoosiers support the President’s boldness to stand up to China, but we need other countries to start doing their part to escalate the economic pressure against China as well. This is why I introduced bipartisan legislation to help protect U.S. interests by enlisting the efforts of our allies. A unified approach with our partners in the region is necessary if we plan to tackle China’s unfair trade practices. During my weekly Senate GOP press conference, I further discussed China’s predatory economic practices, watch full remarks here or by clicking the image below.
