When President Donald Trump took office, he inherited a mess at our Southern border. Luckily, he realized this and soon began to end Obama-era policies that subsequently led to massive a reductions in illegal crossings, criminal illegal migrants no longer being set free in America, and the beginning of border wall construction that would eventually result in over 450 miles of our border becoming more secure, which is a huge help for border patrol agents and local law enforcement.
The situation at the border was not only improving because of the physical barrier and revitalized U.S. policies, but also by the diplomacy employed by President Trump with Mexico and other Central American countries that led to a more orderly immigration system that did not encourage people to break the law by illegally entering the U.S.
It was working, until President Joe Biden decided to stop construction of the border wall, end the diplomatic agreements initiated by President Trump including terminating the Migrant Protection Protocols where asylum seekers remain in Mexico before their immigration court date, and reinstate failed policies of the past like catch-and-release, which a former head of Customs and Border Protection (CBP) says will "facilitate illegal immigration".
In 2019, former Obama Department of Homeland Security (DHS) Secretary Jeh Johnson said that during his tenure, he learned that 1,000 apprehensions per day at the Southern border would overwhelm the system. In February, CBP averaged almost 3,600 apprehensions per day.
When the U.S. President speaks, people take notice. President Biden's rhetoric and actions have led migrants to believe that they were "promised" by the President that they could soon enter the country, which has led to the highest rate of apprehensions in two decades. Despite this, Biden's DHS Secretary Alejenadro Mayorkas has refused to call the situation a crisis. In fact, most administration officials have refused to publicly call the situation at the border as a crisis, until White House Press Secretary Jen Psaki accidentally did, before quickly changing her tune.
What is most egregious about the border crisis, is that administration officials, whose policies have led to the deterioration of our immigration system, have seemingly put a gag order on CBP agents and other border officials, telling them not to talk to the press. The apparent reason for this is that if the press were allowed to talk to these individuals and allowed to resume ride-alongs with CBP agents, a bright light would shine on the swift failure of the Biden Administration's policies and their politically-motivated refusal to call the humanitarian crisis at the border what it is, a crisis.
