Governor DeWine Issues Reprieve
(COLUMBUS, Ohio)Today, Ohio Governor Mike DeWine issued a reprieve of execution for Cleveland Jackson, who was scheduled to be executed on November 13, 2019. The new date of execution has been moved to January 13, 2021.
Governor DeWine is issuing this reprieve due to developments regarding two of Jackson's former legal counsel. On Friday, a certified disciplinary complaint was made public against the attorneys specifically related to their representation of Jackson. While a certified disciplinary complaint is only an allegation, this is a serious allegation raising significant questions that need to be resolved in the disciplinary process. It is prudent to issue a reprieve in this matter until the disciplinary process is resolved.
Ongoing issues remain involving the ability of the Ohio Department of Rehabilitation and Corrections to acquire drugs pursuant to their protocol.
