John -- Two years ago, the Violence Against Women Act (VAWA) was allowed to expire. With Trump in the White House and Mitch McConnell’s desk a legislative graveyard, it’s no wonder.
Yesterday the House of Representatives finally voted to reauthorize the bill, life-saving legislation that covers a multitude of comprehensive solutions to domestic violence, sexual assault, dating violence and stalking.
On the heels of yet another senseless and preventable act of violence towards women only the day before, 172 Republicans voted against the bill's reauthorization! Almost all of the reasons given for not supporting the bill were tied to ‘gun rights.’
Every Nay vote is an insult to the families of the Atlanta shooting victims, and to women all across America.
But here’s the good news. Every single one of those 172 lawmakers is up for reelection in 2022, and we can replace them all. That’s why we are working day and night to recruit and support progressive candidates across the country.
Help us replace representatives who care more about gun lobby support than the safety of women and other vulnerable communities.

Brand New Congress has been tracking this bill for years and we are relieved that it has resurfaced and been voted on. But we are angry and frustrated that it has been held up for so long. How many lives could it have saved had it not been allowed to expire two years ago?
We unequivocally condemn all acts of anti-Asian hate, and we will never stop fighting to dismantle white supremacy and the danger it poses.
Our hearts are with the families of the Atlanta shooting victims, and all those we have lost to senseless and avoidable violence.
In solidarity,
Brand New Congress
