Dear John,

Our hearts and minds are heavy with sadness and pain, in light of the tragic killings in Atlanta and the disturbing, escalating number of hate crimes against our Asian American neighbors. We know that many are also holding heavy with fear. We are mourning and grieving together, and also desire to come together in solidarity to share, engage, and make change.

In response to the tragic killings in Atlanta and increase in hate incidents against our Asian American neighbors during the COVID-19 pandemic, NPH is affirming our solidarity and support for all of our Asian neighbors, friends, family, elders, and leaders affected by terrible hate crimes and attacks. We urge all of our members, partners, and allies to join us in speaking up and taking action.

“Over and over again, we heard from respondents [who submitted reports of hate] that it was hurtful to be targeted,” said Cynthia Choi, Stop AAPI Hate’s co-founder. “But it was even more hurtful to have no one stand with them — no one intervened when clearly they were being targeted because of their race, ethnicity and gender.”

Unfortunately, the latest killings in Atlanta are one of many in a series of escalating hate crimes and Anti-Asian attacks that are unfolding both locally and nationally. Over the last 12 months, there have been 3,795 hate incidents reported to the Stop AAPI Hate national coalition. NPH believes that we must both acknowledge the reality of Anti-Asian hate in our nation as well as take actions to address it.

As we strongly affirm our solidarity with all of our AAPI neighbors, we are sharing ways you can donate, volunteer, and otherwise support our Asian American communities during this difficult time.

Here are three actions you can take today:

  1. Donate to support the Atlanta victims and their families with the Asian Americans Advancing Justice Atlanta Chapter
  2. Review StopAAPIHate.org’s 5 Things to Consider When Experiencing Hate and 5 Ways to Help If You Are Witnessing Hate
  3. Sign up for Bystander Intervention Training with Hollaback!
