Denim Day 2021

It’s been over a year since COVID-19 transformed our lives in nearly every way, everywhere, as entire cities and countries issued shelter-in-place orders restricting our social interactions to contain the spread of the virus. When doors closed and isolation began, reports of violence against women, femmes, girls, and non-binary folk began to rise.

But the pandemic of sexual and intimate partner violence is not new. In the US, studies show that someone is sexually assaulted every 73 seconds. Around the world, rape and sexual abuse are everyday violent occurrences—affecting more than a billion individuals over their lifetimes. However, the COVID-19 pandemic has moved communities across the world to build strong solidarity and mutual aid networks.

This year, Peace Over Violence invites you to explore how making solidarity a reality is deeply rooted in community and radical interdependence. It demands educating ourselves and others, relationships, intentions and actions grounded in explicit ethical and political commitments. SOLIDARITY IS US PROTECTING EACH OTHER.

Believing survivors is a critical first step

Translating the belief in survivors into concrete progress has to relate to a structural and policy shift, but also means revisiting our own education in terms of power, consent, and gender. Our conversations are our starting point.

As we mark the 22nd annual Denim Day campaign on Wednesday, April 28, 2021, we are reminded that in order to respond to violence effectively, we must first listen, believe, hold, carry, nurture, protect, and love survivors through their healing journey. We know that this work is necessary and we are committed to doing it together.
