The last four years have dramatically demonstrated just how much work we need to do to restore and strengthen our democracy, and address critical national priorities that have been trapped in gridlock for years.
The sad truth is that one of the main roadblocks standing in the way of democratic progress has been the U.S. Senate.
The Senate’s filibuster rule allows a minority of Senators to block almost all legislation. And the Senate’s already undemocratic structure — which gives a state with 39 million residents like California the same representation (2 votes) as states with less than 1 million people like Wyoming — makes this situation even worse.
Republicans, and Mitch McConnell, have wielded the power of the filibuster over and over to block the wishes of an overwhelming majority of Americans. That’s not how democracy should work.
We can’t afford to let the filibuster rule continue to stand in the way of democratic progress in America and the wishes of an overwhelming majority of voters.
Earlier this week Senate Democrats introduced S1, the For The People Act , a far-reaching democratic reform bill to shore up voting rights protections, end secret money in politics and much more.
We can and must make this happen. Mitch McConnell opposes passage of this legislation. But Americans voted in 2020 to send representatives to Congress to get this type of democratic reform done.
That means if we’re going to protect the right to vote, eliminate partisan gerrymandering, and address corruption in politics, then we must end the filibuster as we know it. Add your name if you agree >>
