Friendwe've been living with COVID for more than a year now. Since the pandemic began, immigrant communities have been among the hardest hit, whether on the forefront as essential workers or recovering from the virus without access to health care.

Millions of undocumented immigrants are still excluded from federal COVID relief and continue to live with great uncertainty about their future. Bottom line: immigrant communities need a pathway to U.S. citizenship, especially as we begin our recovery from COVID.

Yesterday, in a significant step toward empowering immigrant communities, the House of Representatives passed H.R.6, the 2021 American Dream and Promise Act. If passed in the Senate, the Dream and Promise Act would provide a pathway to citizenship for an estimated 4.4 million people who have built their lives in this country — people with Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) or temporary protected status (TPS), or people who are eligible for deferred enforcement departure (DED).

Though this is the most inclusive version of this bill to date, the Senate needs to remove harmful provisions that criminalize communities of color and unfairly exclude people from relief. Relief must be available to everyone.

But that's not all, FriendThis week, Congress unveiled the Citizenship for Essential Workers Act, which would provide a long-overdue pathway to U.S. citizenship for immigrant essential workers who have played a significant role in keeping this country running during the pandemic.

This is a historic moment for immigrants and their loved ones. For far too long, our communities have lived in fear of being separated from their loved ones and from the country that is their home. These two bills move us one step closer to a pathway to citizenship for the 11 million undocumented immigrants in this country. Friend, this moment is ours — let's give it all we've got!
