Getting the Lead Out: WE ACT Pushes Two Lead Bills Through the City Council
WE ACT and its fellow advocates pushed two more lead bills through the New York City Council yesterday to help protect children from lead poisoning. We are in this fight because, despite lead poisoning being entirely preventable, an average of 2,233 children test positive for elevated blood lead levels each year in New York City, and studies show that Black children living below the poverty line are twice as likely to suffer from lead poisoning as poor white or Latino children. We thank New York City Council Speaker Corey Johnson and Council Member Margaret S. Chin for their sponsorship of these bills, and look forward to Mayor Bill de Blasio signing them into law.
