I recently introduced the Postal Vehicle Modernization Act to seize a unique opportunity. The country’s largest civilian vehicle fleet is overdue for replacement — these aging clunkers cost billions in fuel and maintenance costs and they’re increasingly unsafe. Gas guzzlers routinely break down, cause accidents, and sometimes catch fire. Cost-effective EV options are available, and large private fleets like FedEx, UPS and Amazon are electrifying. We can help revitalize our beleaguered Postal Service by investing in safe, reliable EVs and bringing EV charging infrastructure to every postal facility in America. We can save billions in fuel and maintenance costs. We can help accelerate the clean vehicle revolution as a critical part of our response to the climate crisis.
But we must act now. Because Postmaster General Louis DeJoy is trying to sabotage this incredible opportunity by purchasing built-for-obsolescence fossil fuel vehicles.

Postmaster General DeJoy — the discredited political holdover from the Trump administration — told the House Oversight Committee that under his plan only 10% of the Postal Service’s fleet will be electric — and honestly, based on what we know about the massive contract he has championed, even that 10% figure is dubious. It’s not even close to good enough — and we must stop him.
DeJoy did Trump’s political bidding last year by degrading postal service performance to undermine mail-in voting. Now he’s trying to squander a once-in-a-generation opportunity to modernize USPS and add crucial momentum to our nation’s clean vehicle transformation.
The Postal Vehicle Modernization Act will not only save USPS money and improve performance, it will support well-paying jobs in the electric vehicle industry — right here in America. There is simply no reason to squander this historic opportunity, and every reason to demand that USPS gets it right.
