John,
The House will hear a bill on D.C. statehood next week on March 22 -- meaning we might soon have a 51st state.
D.C. Delegate Eleanor Holmes Norton, who introduced the legislation, noted, “With Democrats in control of the White House, the House and the Senate, we have never been closer to D.C. statehood. This hearing will inform the many Americans who still do not know that the 712,000 D.C. residents pay full federal taxes but have no voting representation in Congress, and that Congress has the final say on all local D.C. matters. It is long past time for Congress to act.”
We couldn't agree more. But Mitch McConnell and Senate Republicans have publicly objected to statehood for years, and they're now doing everything they can to stop millions of tax-paying American citizens from getting the proper representation they deserve in Congress.
A majority of Americans support granting statehood to D.C.-- and we're demanding Congress finally act on this long overdue legislation -- but as we face an uphill battle in the Senate, we need to ensure every Americans' voice is heard. That's why we're reaching out to you directly.
Thank you for speaking out for your fellow Americans and doing the necessary work to reform our democracy.
