We have a very special line up of events over the next two weeks, all of which are incredibly timely and important.

Join us on Monday 22nd March at 11am for a discussion of the history and status of free speech in the UK featuring former Cabinet Minister Dr Liam Fox MP and journalist Jodie Ginsberg.

On Tuesday, Johan Norberg will be interviewed on the nature of Open Societies by our very own Dr Madsen Pirie.

And on the 30th March Dr Eamonn Butler is joined by three professors to examine the legacy of the big man Adam Smith himself. We promote the man's great works, and what their understanding has helped to achieve in the modern world so we're exceptionally pleased to have a stellar line-up to help viewers understand how the father of economics helped shaped the modern world.

** The Perpetual Battle for Free Speech

Throughout history there has been an ongoing battle between those who believe in the Freedom of Speech and Freedom of Expression and those who would deny it for their own purposes. How did we get to where we are today? Is freedom of speech really under threat and if so from whom? How do we calibrate the defence of our essential values in an era of rapid technological change and protect both our freedoms and the safety of our citizens?

The Right Honourable Dr Liam Fox MP, Former Secretary of State for International Trade and Former Secretary of State for Defence, speaks at the Adam Smith Institute at 11am on Monday 22nd March to make a pitch for free speech followed by an in-depth interview with journalist Jodie Ginsberg. Together they’ll explore the issues in civil society, law, and the philosophical battle over what we should be able to say, when, and where.

About the Speakers:

The Rt Hon Dr Liam Fox MP has been MP for North Somerset since 1992. In John Major’s Government he served as a Minister at the Foreign & Commonwealth Office and as Government Whip (Lord Commissioner of the Treasury). Under David Cameron he served as Defence Secretary and between July 2016 and July 2019, he served in Theresa May’s Government as Secretary of State for International Trade and President of the Board of Trade. As International Trade Secretary he was tasked with creating the UK’s first Independent Trade Policy in 40 years.

Jodie Ginsberg is the Chief Executive of Internews Europe, a media and information development non-governmental organisation based in London. Internews Europe is part of the Internews alliance, which works in more than 80 countries worldwide. Internews has more than four decades working in some of the most challenging environments for freedom of expression and a free media.

Adam Smith's Legacy

We just celebrated the 245th anniversary of the publication of Adam Smith's Wealth of Nations, one of the most important books ever written.

Smith revolutionised our understanding of commerce. He explained how trade enriches our lives and his works laid the foundations of a whole new field of study: economics.

But how do we view Smith's works and the larger Scottish Enlightenment in the 21st Century? Do we take for granted the foundation Smith and his contemporaries laid which allowed us to build our free and prosperous society?

Join a panel of Smith experts to talk about the pioneer economist’s relevance for today — including statues, slavery, empire, free speech, culture, community and identity.
