John,
The unspeakable tragedy in Atlanta that left eight people killed -- six of them Asian women -- was an act rooted in white supremacy and misogyny.
And it put the increase in disturbing violence we've seen against the Asian American and Pacific Islander (AAPI) community over the last year on display. This kind of terror has no place here -- and it's time to take action against the deadly consequences that sexism and discrimination have on women.
During the COVID-19 pandemic, gun sales have sky-rocketed, and domestic violence cases have gotten even worse. Domestic violence assaults surpassed a three-year average in 2020 in the City of Denver alone. But it doesn't have to be this way.
We can mitigate this by reauthorizing the Violence Against Women Act (VAWA). VAWA, first passed in 1994 (and authored by then-Senator Joe Biden), helps ensure the safety of women. It allocates federal funds toward investigating violent, gender-based crimes and supporting survivors of abuse.
Violence against women, which has a disproportionate impact on marginalized groups, holds them back from achieving their potential. And it won't improve unless we pledge to act.
Gender equality has long been one of Diana's top priorities. She is a champion for this issue because she knows we can live in a world free from gender-based violence. We want to see VAWA reauthorized and need you to join us.
The VAWA expired under the Trump administration, and Diana and her colleagues voted to reauthorize it just this week. If you're with them, pledge your support for action to keep women safe from misogyny and gender-based violence. Sign onto the petition now >> [link removed]
