Hi John,
I recently spoke with ABC News about the horrific rise in anti-Asian violence we've seen in recent weeks. I had this message for viewers:
"Our people are getting attacked, our people are getting harassed, spat on, beat up, you know, slashed. Please, somebody pay attention, please notice us."
I really hope you'll pay attention to this growing problem, John. For years, Donald Trump peddled racist, xenophobic rhetoric scapegoating Asian communities. As a result, over 3,000 anti-Asian hate incidents have occured over the past year -- and those are just the ones that are reported.
Our businesses are suffering, our community is hurting, and our elders are afraid to leave their homes -- so I've been working overtime alongside my colleagues in Congress to ensure we confront anti-Asian racism at the federal level.
I know that addressing this issue isn't going to be easy. When my resolution condemning anti-Asian sentiment passed the House last year, I got a slew of racist voicemails saying the exact things we collectively condemned in that resolution.
But I've been truly inspired by the many people like you who have stood in solidarity with Asian Americans during these challenging times. I know that if we all stay vigilant as we confront anti-Asian racism, we can keep our communities safe.
