Today, I'll be voting for the Dream and Promise Act. This legislation will permanently protect DREAMers -- people who arrived in the U.S. as children -- from deportation and offer a path to citizenship for millions who have come here to escape wars, natural disasters, and human rights abuses.

America is a nation of immigrants, and my own family is among the many who came here seeking freedom, safety, and opportunity. Throughout my whole political career, I've stood against divisive policies aimed at demonizing immigrants.
In the Virginia legislature, I opposed efforts to require Virginia to track and report on the location of refugees who resettle here. In Congress, I fought against the Trump administration's shameful and bigoted policies -- such as their public charge rule that would have made it harder for working-class immigrants to obtain green cards.
Now that we've turned the page on Donald Trump, we must improve our laws so that they reflect our core values: dignity, freedom, and opportunity.
The Dream and Promise Act will do precisely that. We need to ensure that it goes into the Senate with a clear path to becoming law.
